Only three days after a dawn raid to clear one of Britain’s most prestigious streets, it was back to business as usual in Park Lane yesterday.
Dozens of Romanian gipsies returned to turn the tree-lined central London road into a litter-strewn mess.
Members of the Roma camp laughed and chatted as they were entertained by an accordion player with their possessions scattered around them.

On Friday police and council officials had moved on 60 rough sleepers who have turned the underground footways around Marble Arch into their home.
Twenty-one took up an offer to fly home for free if they went straight to Heathrow.

But yesterday it was clear that the desperate and expensive tactics have come to nothing.
And the ‘cease and desist’ notices, carefully translated into Romanian and handed out to dozens of people, were worthless.
Some of the Romanian travellers insist they have come to Britain looking for work, but are now trapped because they cannot get any without an address.

Others simply state they are waiting for the authorities to provide them with jobs and accommodation and are in no rush to go anywhere.
Whatever the truth, council officials and police blame the unwanted visitors for a surge in begging, pickpocketing, shoplifting and anti-social behaviour.
Nearby businesses, which include the Dorchester Hotel and a string of luxury car dealerships, are furious at the mess.
Large areas of grass are strewn with rubbish, from suitcases to soiled blankets and half-eaten food, and bushes have been transformed into stinking open cesspools.
Yesterday, members of the Roma camp could be seen laughing and chatting as they were entertained by an accordion player in the balmy weather.
Their possessions, including piles of cardboard and pushchairs loaded with clothes, were scattered around them.
Nickie Aiken, of Westminster City Council, said the ‘squares, gardens and subways of London’ are not for ‘hijacking by groups of people who have no intention of contributing to the city.’
