The town’s magistrates heard staff became suspicious of the women and a man who was also in the shop and the door was locked electronically.
And while the trio were locked in the shop waiting for the police the man was caught on CCTV punching and kicking the women, one his wife and the other his niece.
Eddie Harrison, prosecuting, said the police believed this was the man’s way of trying to distance himself from the women’s actions.
But the magistrates, who sent Muresan Sava to prison for 21 days, said he was clearly providing the distraction while the other members of the team stole.
Muresan Sava, 45, his wife Lamita Sava, 45, and Argitina Sava, 25, all of Crumpsall, Manchester, pleaded guilty to theft of rings from Rahman’s jewelers in Whalley Range.

Argitina pleaded guilty to three other thefts and Lamita to four other thefts. Lamita was jailed for 200 days and Argitina for 160 days.
Mr Harrison said the two women had extensive record for theft and nearly all could be described as distraction thefts. Muresan had no previous convictions.
Mr Harrison said Muresan engaged staff in Rahmans in conversation while the two women were at the other end of the store. The reached over and removed a tray of rings from a display but then replaced it.
“Two rings were never recovered and it is suspected these were swallowed by one or both of the defendants,” said Mr Harrison.
“When Mr Rahman became suspicious the door was locked and the police called. Muresan tried to distance himself from the behavior of the two women and he was seen to hit both of them repeatedly.”
